Story House

Experiential

For Audible’s month-long Story House activation, Smooth Technology helped create a physical, explorable world for audiobooks.

The multi-floor public installation invited visitors to discover stories through a series of interactive “Story Tiles”: physical representations of audiobook titles embedded with RFID and NFC technology. Guests could browse shelves, select a tile, and place it onto one of Smooth’s custom-built illuminated readers. The reader responded with lighting effects and automatically triggered audiobook previews, transforming digital audio browsing into a tactile, social experience.

Smooth designed and developed the full software and hardware ecosystem powering the activation. The system managed a catalog of more than 1,000 audiobook titles, including metadata, cover art, RFID/NFC associations, and audio preview assets. Smooth built the database architecture, content management workflows, playback systems, and custom RFID hardware and lighting used throughout the space. Each Story Tile could also be tapped with a phone, instantly opening the associated title within the Audible app or browser experience for browsing, saving, or purchase.

A major focus of the project was reliability at scale: creating a rock-solid interactive system capable of running continuously for a month-long public activation with thousands of daily interactions and a constantly accessible library of content. The platform was designed to be easily maintainable and dynamically updateable throughout the run of the experience.

The shop also has two large listening lounges equipped with surround-sound, listening booths where individuals or small groups can sample the audiobooks and a listening bar where patrons can consult a “story tender” to get personalized recommendations from a list of titles available on Audible.

On the first floor, choose an audiobook “tile” from genre-specific shelves. You can place these on dockets in listening booths for a communal experience, or choose one with headphones for a solo listen.

In a city that’s always looking for the next new thing, Audible Story House feels like a natural experiment: part retail concept, part cultural space, part tech showcase. Whether it’s a glimpse of what bookstores might become or simply a clever one-off, it’s a reminder that in New York City, even the oldest forms of storytelling are looking to stay current.
