Who Is Smooth Technology?

And Interactive

Offering elegant solutions and igniting wonder across the globe

Smooth Technology is a crew of artists and engineers pushing technology forward, challenging what is possible with brilliant, kaleidoscopic wizardry.

Our lab in Brooklyn, New York is a playground for discovery and delight—where the end of the rainbow touches down. We pursue the bizarre, the impossible, the amusing.

The Studio

Smooth HQ is uniquely prepared to tackle every step of the design and prototyping process. With the combination of a large workspace, cutting-edge tools, and an expansive library of parts, we’re able to test ideas and imaginations at the drop of a hat.

Smooth Technology Studio

The Team

Smooth Technology is a hive of artists-turned-engineers led by Sachem Arvidson, James DeVito, Dylan Fashbaugh, and Dave Sheinkopf.

Our team members have toured the world both on stage and backstage, designed award-winning brain-computer interfaces, taught at Ivy Leagues and public schools. This shared passion for human-centered design and interaction is what drives us.

We’re inspired by genre- and world-spanning creations that follow this path, from the minimalist music of Steve Reich to the lowbit sounds of Tristan Perich to William Onyeabor’s percussive funk.

We appreciate the pristine magic of light artists such as James Turrell and Anthony McCall. We also draw inspiration from technology’s imperfections in the physical world: the flicker of broken pixels on a Times Square billboard; the digital noise in video broadcasts; the unrepeatable fusion of human, machine, and terrain.

At the core of our practice is the mantra:

“If it’s not fun, it shouldn’t be done.”

“…there was something super magical about it.”

Asher Levine, designer, Lady Gaga’s Enigma tour.

“[The LED bra is] programmed to the music, and it syncs up with the lighting desk, and it talks to the lighting desk so we can tell the bra what to say and what to do; if we want it to have words on it, we can make it have words on it! It’s very ahead, and again, technology is amazing! We can put technology into a bra!”

Antony Ginandjar, producer, Katy Perry’s Witness tour.

“A true collaborative process.” Alexandra Mandelkorn, stylist, Janelle Monae’s 2019 Met Gala look.”
